This romantic fantasy was based on a popular play by Arthur Wing Pinero. A scarred war veteran and a plain housemaid find love and happiness in a supposedly haunted house.

The script is by DeWitt Bodeen (Cat People) and Herman J. Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane) and manages to strike the perfect balance between emotional realism and fantasy.
